Games of Love and Chance
Unexpected connections, missed chances and unexplained parallels are omnipresent in the work of Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski and they are a central part of his French-language Three Colours Trilogy. Composed of Blue, White and Red, the three features are inspired by, respectively, the French ideals of liberty, equality and fraternity. But in all three films, which work as standalone stories but of course contain unexpected parallels and connections, Kieślowski takes a sideways approach to his themes. Blue explores the freedom to not reconnect with society after a tragedy, and how freedom can be impacted by chance. White looks at gaining equality but using that to literally get even with someone, while Red, set in Geneva instead of Paris and looking at a male-female couple who aren’t lovers, is about fraternity in often subtle and surprising ways. All three films are unpredictable – yet recognisably Kieślowski’s own.
The three films will be shown on 35mm and with English subtitles.
